How To Open My Garage Door During Power Outage

Oh no. There’s a power outage. This is extremely inconvenient. How are you supposed to leave the house when your car is stuck in the garage? Well have no fear, All Right Garage Doors is here with a guide on how to manually open your garage door from the inside and outside, and how to reconnect the garage door system.

MANUALLY OPENING THE GARAGE FROM THE INSIDE

Step 1: Make sure the garage door is completely closed, and the springs are intact. If there are damages to the garage door system, it may be hazardous and risky to open the garage door.

If this is the case, give us a call, and we will come to the rescue! All Right Garage Doors offers 24-hour garage door emergency services throughout Irvine and the surrounding Orange County areas.

Step 2: While you are waiting for us to arrive, pull the red emergency cord on the garage door opener. Pulling the cord will disengage the release lever and disconnect the door from the garage door opener. The red cord usually is attached to a red handle and hangs from the center rail.

Step 3: Using the handles on the garage door, lift the door straight up until it is fully open. For safety purposes, open the door slowly and make sure it has stopped moving completely. The last thing anyone would want is for it to accidentally close!

If the door springs are correctly balanced, the garage door should open easily and stay in place. If the door is hard to open or is having difficulty staying open, close the garage door and give us a call to inspect the door and repair the issue.

Step 4: Drive your vehicle out and manually close your garage door until it reaches the ground. Before leaving and closing your garage door though, make sure you have another way of getting back inside (that’d be a little awkward if you were locked outside of your house, wouldn’t it?).

Step 5: Because the automatic garage door opener is disconnected, the door will not be securely shut. To secure your home, slide the metal lock bar on the inside of the garage door towards the door tracks.

MANUALLY OPENING THE GARAGE FROM THE OUTSIDE

For those who have a garage that is not connected to the house and the only access inside is the garage door, there should be an emergency release kit. You will need the appropriate key to unlock the socket, which will allow you to open the door manually. Each kit varies in its instructions, so it’s best to reference the users manual. If you have trouble getting into your detached garage door, don’t hesitate to give us a call, because we’ll gladly come to your Irvine home to help.

RECONNECT THE GARAGE DOOR SYSTEM

Once the power is back on, you’ll want to take advantage of the garage door’s automatic system. Here’s how to reconnect your automatic garage door opening system.

Step 1: Make sure the door is unlocked by sliding the metal lock bars on the garage door away from the garage tracks. If the door is still locked while it is trying to open electronically, it can cause hazardous and significant damage.

Step 2A: Pull the red cord down towards the motor (away from the door) and pull up on the door until it snaps back into place. You should hear a click, and that’s when you know it’s back in its proper position.

Step 2B: The alternative option is to use the remote opener to open the garage. The track should force the spring attachment to reconnect automatically.
